What to pack – by That Oxford Girl
With A Level Results Day on Thursday, this week is a big one for many of you! In the coming months, you’ll be moving away from home and embarking on your university journey. Exciting? Yes! Nerve-wracking? Yes! Stressful? Yes!
Well let me help you out with a little bit of that stress by creating a tick list of everything you’re going to need to make your first term go as smoothly as possible (which leaves you time to finish that last minute reading, enjoy the final few weeks of summer and spend time with your family and friends before you head off).
Grab your suitcase and off we go…

Bedroom Essentials
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”7980″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Bed linen, sheets, duvets and pillows
- Find out what size bed you have (I turned up on my first day and had a double which meant an emergency trip out for new bed linen – don’t get caught out!)
- Your first term will no doubt be pretty jam packed (Lots of partying…and, of course, lots of work) so check out Student Essentials Luxury Bedding Packs to ensure you get a good night’s sleep.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”7586″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Cushions, photo frames, fairy lights
- Uni accommodation can often be pretty bare, but you can change that with just a few bits and bobs!
- It might feel strange but this is your new home, so it’s definitely worth making it feel like a comfy haven, away from the library, where you can chill and hang out with friends.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Pins, blue tack, damage free hanging set
Combat any homesickness by bringing a few touches from home – put up your photos, hang up your posters or prints and add a touch of YOU to your new room!
Hangers
Who knows what exciting social occasions you’ll find yourself at this term? Hanging all of your outfits up will make them easy to see and even easier to grab when you’re in a hurry!
Laundry bag
With all these new activities and events, you’re certainly going to need to be on top of your laundry, so I suggest purchasing a bag to keep your room looking tidy until you get around to it.
Hot water bottle
Uni accommodation can sometimes be a little chilly!
Doorstop
A top tip in Freshers’ Week for you all – leave your door open. A doorstop is a great way to welcome new friends in from your corridor.

There’s only one word to sum up Freshers’ Week: FULL-ON which can make it easy to forget the library is calling. Get organised now, so you’re ready for the term ahead:
- Computer/laptop
- Extension Lead
- Stationery
- Notepads
- Folders
- Planner
When life is busy it can be so easy to forget things, so get yourself a planner to stay on top of your workload, lectures and socials.

Bathroom Essentials
Whether you have your own en suite or are sharing with your new pals, there are a few bathroom basics you won’t be able to live without:
- Bath/shower mat
- Towels
- Bathroom bin
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”7581″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1534751289873{border-top-width: 1px !important;border-top-color: #dddddd !important;border-top-style: solid !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Kitchen Essentials
Many of you will have the option of eating in hall/canteen but you may also have access to a shared kitchen. Kitchens at uni are social hubs where you’ll come together with your new friends to catch up on each other’s days and cook up a storm (or sometimes beans on toast!).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
- Kettle/ Tea/Coffee/Mugs
These are the most essential purchases of all – tea and coffee are so much more than just tea and coffee when you get to uni – you arrive as Freshers, all feeling pretty nervous and it seems a bit random asking your new friends if they want to hang out but instantly, by asking them if they’d like to come over for a cup of tea or coffee, you have a purpose, a reason and a social activity in the making. - Chocolates/biscuits
These work in much the same way as tea and coffee, a welcoming gesture! - Cutlery
For all those dinners you’ll be hosting with your new friends. - Utensils
How many you decide to go for really depends on what sort of cuisine you’re going to be turning your hand to but a spatula, ladle and potato masher certainly won’t go amiss. - Glasses
Water glasses are a must but let’s face it, a few wine glasses would go down well too! - Plates/Bowls
- Pans
- Oven proof dishes
- Toaster
Trust me, there will be nights where beans on toast is the only option (particularly mid essay-crisis!) - Oven gloves
- Draining rack
When you’re sharing with others, washing up can quickly build up, so get yourself a draining rack to prevent mayhem in the kitchen! - Tea towel
- Tin foil & cling film
- Bottle opener
There will, of course, be cause for multiple celebrations in your first term!

Fun essentials

- Lighting
The bright glare of your uni room might not create the atmosphere you’re hoping for when hosting socials or relaxing at the end of the long day. So why not purchase some LED tea lights or LED string lights to create that warm glow?
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]
- Plant pots
A little greenery is an instant mood lifter, your room will become the one everyone wants to hang out in. - Ice cube Trays
Make your parties the ones to remember with quirky, personal touches. - Throw
- You’ll no doubt spend a lot of time with your friends watching endless Netflix episodes, so a comfy throw is a must, whether to wrap yourself up in or to lay down on the floor to create extra seating/lying space when more people pop in!

You’ll move away from home, delve into your subject, meet loads of new people, make lifelong friends, join loads of clubs and societies, try your hand at an abundance of new activities and return home for the Christmas vac with an experience that will no doubt stay with you for life!
