My goals when I started University were; to have fun, make friends and get good grades, so far it’s going great! I am pretty sure that everyone’s goals will be very similar. I thought I would write something a bit different to the usual ‘student advice’ posts, and instead talk about what to avoid when starting University!
Avoid bringing things you don’t need
At University you won’t need all of your cuddly toys and magazine collections! Be selective with what you pack; you won’t have room for it all in your dorm room. Don’t worry if you forget anything either as your family can post things to you or you can always go out and buy it.
Avoid having a messing dorm room
When you first move in to University you need to ensure you unpack and organise your dorm room. As you will be looking after yourself there will be nobody to help you get ready in the morning or find your hairbrush! If you have a nice clean dorm room it will be nice for friends to come and stay round too, nobody wants to stay in a smelly dorm room.
Avoid spending all of your student loan as soon as you get it
I know far too many students who have made this mistake and have had to get a job or leave University because they didn’t have enough for food or rent. You can’t do well at University if you’re not there because you can’t afford to be. Budget your money, ensure you have enough to pay the bills and buy food and then you can treat yourself.
Avoid letting yourself go
It’s easy to get caught up in the going out partying lifestyle at university, but don’t forget you need to look after yourself. During University, you need to make sure you get at least 8 hours sleep a night and to eat well because students tend to put on weight!
And last but not least don’t forget to have fun…
